Integrating Framed Art Pictures Into Your Living Room Decor
Integrating Framed Art Pictures Into Your Living Room Decor
Framed art pictures can be incorporated into a living room design in a multitude of ways. A bold, bright print that captures the eye can serve as a focal point, with furnishings, colors, and accents all working to complement that piece. Conversely, a landscape painting can provide interest but otherwise be assimilated into the overall theme and design scheme. When it comes to living room decor, wall art can really pick up a room. Here are some tips and ideas on integrating framed art pictures into your living room decor.
Framed Art Pictures as Focal Points
Many people choose to design their living room around a single print or series of art pieces. In this case, the wall art becomes the focal point of the room, and the rest of the room is designed around it. If you choose to go this route, look for a print that’s bold and compelling, such as Tony Saladino’s Red Cloud II. Here the rich colors and decisive geometric forms of this abstract art print can dominate a room and would work well in a modern, art deco, or contemporary design scheme. Or you might go with a vintage fine art print featuring a brightly colored advertisement from another era, such as Leonetto Cappiello’s Parapluie Revel. In this case, choose a more neutral color scheme for the room and then throw in coordinating red and yellow accents to pull the whole look together.
If you want your print to serve as a focal point, pay particular attention to size. After all, a 24 x 36 framed print will be much more likely to catch the eye than an 8 x 10 one. If you’ve fallen in love with a smaller print, try finding several others that will complement that piece and hang them in a series on a single bare wall. If you go with a larger print, display it on an otherwise empty wall or in another prominent place, such as above the fireplace or sofa.
Other Ideas for Living Room Art
If you want your wall art to blend in with your living room decor rather than dominate it, then you need to take a close look at your decor first before you purchase your wall art. In this case, the framed art picture should serve to accentuate the design scheme and add to the overall feel and look of the room. If your living room is decorated in country-style, then go with a simple but colorful print, such as Jo Moulton’s Red Cupboard. Or for a more traditional decor theme, choose a classic landscape like Monet’s Chemin Dans Les Bles A Pourville.
A great wall art option that lends an elegant yet subtle feel to a variety of design schemes is black & white photography. For instance, Harold Silverman’s Black and White Morning, with its black silhouetted trees and barren landscape, can add interest and balance to a rustic decor. On the …
Turn Photos on Canvas Into Abstract Art
Turn Photos on Canvas Into Abstract Art
Many people are familiar with those photos of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Elvis, and Humphrey Bogart all sitting together in a diner or at a bar, enjoying a drink. We all know that these are not real photographs, but instead several different photos that were used to create this one, unique art work. Someone took the time to place all of these people together so that it formed a different type of art work that many retro art lovers fell for. How about those that love abstract art, yet don’t want to pay the high prices for those beautiful canvas prints? Believe it or not, it is easy to create your own abstract art with photos on canvas.
When you really think about it, the process is simple. Abstract art is just how it sounds – abstract. Things don’t have to line up perfectly, they don’t have to match, and they don’t even have to have a theme. You can take some of your favorite photographs and turn them into abstract art with a little cut and paste. It is very easy to use family members, landscapes, object, and so much more to create some extremely unique art works that you can be proud to hang anywhere.
First, you will need good editing software that you are comfortable with to edit the different photographs you choose. Cut and paste the different parts of your photos into one main photo with your software, making sure that you save your changes after each item that you like. The beauty of editing software and photographs is that you can change and rearrange anything you would like, no matter how far you are in the photograph. Soften the edges, smear them together, or create sharp lines with crisp, hard edges – it is all up to you since you are the artist.
However, you do want to make sure that you save your art work in a format that will make it easy for a canvas printer to print your photos on canvas and create abstract art. Once you finish all of your editing and get your abstract art piece exactly the way that you like it, you are ready to turn it into photos on canvas that you will be proud to hang anywhere.…
Art and Photographic Portraits
Art and Photographic Portraits
What is art? Art is subjective, and not everyone agrees on what makes something art. Something like beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. A client told me not long ago that while she had no problem hanging large art pieces on her walls, she just couldn’t see a large family photo on her didn’t want to look at herself “that big!”
Wow!
I know my ears turned red because I could feel the heat coming off them! I stood there in stunned silence for a minute, then said, “So, you don’t consider portraits as art?!” I felt like I had been slapped in the face!
You see, I have dedicated myself to creating the most beautiful family portraits possible for the last 16 years. To me, and to the vast majority of my clients, (I must say all my real clients), a fine family portrait truly is an art piece. A family art treasure! And I would venture to say that even the client I referenced at the beginning here would, in the case of a fire, grab her family portrait and run for I could be ‘s happened before.
Since I was a very young boy and to now, I have always taken my inspiration for my work from the Old Masters of painting. Their ability to show personalities and emotion in their images has always drawn me in. Most of their works were portraits of friends and patrons. Yes, portraits. Are they art? Absolutely! Very few would disagree.
Back when the “Old Masters” were contemporaries, film hadn’t been invented, so there was no photography as we know it. And as I said, the majority of their works were portraits commissioned by their patrons, or inspired by their friends. Certainly landscapes and city scenes, slices of life as it was then were also subjects for paintings. Very much as it is today with painters and photographers alike.
For the most part, the job of creating portraits has been turned over to photographers, and those who specialize in portraiture have received the baton from the portrait painters of old. The art of portraiture largely remains the same. Only the tools have changed. The ability to ‘see’ and to compose remain the cornerstone of the portraitist’s art, along with the ability to draw out the personality of the subject and transfer the vision to print media.
There are many parallels between the painting masters portraits of old and today’s photographic portrait artists. Not the least being that we are commissioned to create the portraits in the first place, and it is our passion and livelihood. Depicting personality, emotion and moment has always been about lighting and featuring certain aspects of the subject whether captured in oils or on film or by digital sensor. And today’s portraits will be the future’s historical record of our contemporary life.…
A Brief Introduction of HTML
A Brief Introduction of HTML
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) is the text markup language currently used on the World Wide Web. If you have ever written a school a report or business memo, you have encountered text markup. Your document probably came back to you covered in red ink, courtesy of your teacher or boss. The symbols and acronyms used in those editorial markup suggested changes for you to interpret or implement.
In that scenario, markup is separate from the actual content of your document. When you create, a document with a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect, the program uses markup language to indicate the structure of formatting of that electronic document. What you see on your screen looks like a page of formatted text; the rest is done “behind the scene.” HTML is the not so behind the scenes markup languages that is used to tell Web browser how to structure and display Web pages.
HTML has a very well-defined syntax; all HTML document should follow a formal structure. The World Wide Web Consortium(W3C) is the primary organization that attempts to standardize HTML (as well as many other technologies used on the web). To provide a standard, the W3C must carefully specify all aspects of the technology. In the case of HTML, this means precisely defining the elements in the language.
The W3C has defined HTML as an application of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). In short,SGML is a language used to define other languages by specifying the allowed document structure in the form of document type definition (DTD), which indicates the syntax that can be used the various element of a language such as HTML…
Nothing Close to Legendary Machu Picchu
Nothing Close to Legendary Machu Picchu
Looking at the photographs exhibited to celebrate the centenary of the discovery of Machu Picchu one can’t help but conclude that a centennial celebration definitely deserves to be better. 100 Years of Machu Picchu organized by the Embassy of Peru along with the Instituto Cervantes of New Delhi falls grossly short of capturing the beauty and the spirit of the sacred Inca City which was elevated to the status of a wonder of the world.
Discovered by the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911 Machu Picchu is often citied as of the most extraordinary feats of architecture and engineering achievements ever. Bad prints marred by harsh direct lighting and woefully displayed in the lobby of the Instituto Cervantes suggest that little or no planning went into executing this exhibition. While the images cover all the bases in their bid to highlight the marvels of the ancient city such as temples, solar clocks, fountains, living quarters, urban sectors, curved agricultural terraces yet somewhere they don’t move you.
Some images like a view of Machu Picchu with Huayna Picchu in the background make you stop and look long enough to soak in the beauty of the hallowed Inca city but this is short-lived. What irks is the realization that a simple Internet search would throw up better images of Machu Picchu’s history and discovery! Additionally the images have no credits or extra information besides stating the obvious which in any case is visible. Besides the lobby a separate room displays a handful of reprints that try to trace Bingham’s journey. There are maps dating from early 19th century, photos of Bingham and his team a hundred years ago as they unearthed what was considered to be lost for centuries, which in a stark contrast to the ones in the lobby, manage to redeem the exhibition to some extent.
The room has soothing music from the Andes playing in tandem with an audio-visual that even features images from Robot / Enthiran with Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan prancing around in a song that was shot amidst the ruins of Machu Picchu!
The few photos in the enclosure surely stand out and the exhibition would have been better if the journey of discovery was traced rather than putting together postcard images. The displays include a few pages from travel magazines and encyclopedias that show Machu Picchu along with a book with Rajini ‘Robot / Enthiran’ kant on it minus the fabled landscape… Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words but maybe the people behind 100 Years of Machu Picchu believe that seeing is what else could explain the shoddy effort.
100 Years of Machu Picchu is on display at Instituto Cervantes, Hanuman Road, Connaught Place (CP), New Delhi – 110001…
How to Create Abstract Paintings by Seeing in the Dark! Part 1
How to Create Abstract Paintings by Seeing in the Dark! Part 1
Every night just before I go to sleep I am inundated with inspirational images that offer me help in visualising potential abstract or surreal paintings.
Having spoken to a few people I have been surprised to hear that a lot of them appear to be unaware of the phenomenon before their own eyes.
When I asked someone what they knew of the after images of the eye I was amazed to hear that they knew nothing about it… “Well, what do you see when you close your eyes?” – the reply came fast “Nothing!”
If any of you answered the same then read on…
Here are a couple of very simple experiments that will guarantee to amaze you.
Find yourself a piece of brightly colored paper and cut it out so that it is a rough circle of about two inches in diameter. The best colors (but you should try them all if you can) are bright blue, pink, orange, red or green. If you cannot find any brightly colored paper then find some watercolor or acrylic paint and produce the colored circle on a piece of white paper – then cut it out.
I suggest you get a piece of white paper about A3 size (or two pieces of photocopy paper side by side… they are A4 size – and two A4’s make A3!) Place it on a table before you.
Grab yourself a seat next to the table so that the white paper is set landscape ways in front of you (that longest measurement wide).
Take your color circle and place it in the center of the white paper… and stare at it for the count of 120 elephants (or seconds if you prefer!). Your eyes need to be about 6 to 8 inches from the circle.…
Interior Decoration With Abstract Art
Interior Decoration With Abstract Art
Abstract art is one of the best styles to decorate your home with. Abstract art offers many advantages aver representational are such as still life, portrait or landscape such as the ease with which it can be matched to many different styles of interior design. Modern art such as Abstract Expressionism and Action Painting can be matched based on colors and therefore is easier to work into a rooms design. The wide range of colors used in a single piece of abstract art makes it easier to change the color or feel of a room without having to replace the art on the walls.
Abstract and modern art is often non-representational, meaning it does not depict a particular identifiable image, but focuses more on color, shape and pattern. Using abstract art, a room can be created without the subject matter of the artwork used for decoration defining the theme of the design. It allows the interior designer to focus on creating a feel for a room rather than a specific motif.
Artwork created in the style of the Abstract Expressionists and other modern artists has the advantage of not taking too much attention from the other elements of the room, as well. Subjective imagery draws the eye and engages the analytical mind, where abstract art adds to the feel of a place without commanding the critical mind to evaluate the content of an image. This is most likely why abstract art is used almost exclusively in the design of sets for newer televisions shows. The next time you see a popular TV drama notice the style of artwork that decorates the offices and homes of the characters. It is usually abstract, most likely to keep the viewer focused on the action of the characters instead of trying to figure out what is in the paintings behind the actors.
Because many abstract artist work quickly on large canvases, it is possible to find large pieces of abstract art for a relatively reasonable price. A five-foot tall canvas depicting people, landscapes or still-life images will often take much longer to complete than certain styles of abstract painting. This does not make abstract art inferior or less valuable, but it does mean that abstract artists can price work lower than artists working in other styles. Interior decorators can take advantage of this fact and create a unified and cohesive feel for all the rooms in a house or all the pieces of artwork in a room without having to spend a fortune.
Abstract and modern art works best with furniture and accessories that have a more modern design and feel. Clean lines, muted colors and sparseness of placement allow the exciting and busy nature of abstract art to come forth and complement a room without creating a feeling of chaos within the elements.…

Color Washing Your Walls
Color Washing Your Walls
Color washing is a nice technique to use over walls that are already painted. It is an easy way to change the look of any room without having to base paint. It is just the right touch to add life to any room.
This technique can be washed over any sheen of paint, however it seems to work best over flat paint. You will be using diluted paint to wash the walls with. It is important that you use a lint free rag to apply the paint.
This faux technique can be a little messy. Make sure you lay down a drop cloth while you are painting. It is very likely you will have drips while you are washing the walls.
You will begin this process by pouring a small portion of your paint into a small container that will be easy for you to work with. You will add a little water at a time. Each time you add water make sure you stir the paint well. Keep adding a little at a time until your paint is an inky consistency. As you paint you will find that consistency will start to thicken. You can add more paint or water as needed. It is important to keep the inky consistency so that paint will not be too thick when applied to your walls.
After diluting your paint you will be ready to begin. Use a rag that is easy for you to work with. I recommend a size that fits within the palm of your hand. This will make it easy to work with and help keep the dripping down.
Place the rag into the inky paint, getting the entire rag wet. Squeeze your rag to remove excess water and paint. Your rag will still be wet but not drenched. Start at one corner of the room and move around the room from one wall to the next. Begin at the top corner and work your way down to the bottom. You will wash the paint on the walls just as you would wash your walls with water. Do it in a random pattern so that you are not creating a definite pattern. You will have a varied amount of paint from once section to the next. This is the look your are trying to achieve.
If you need to touch up the paint in the future, just repeat this process. You will do it in smaller amounts a needed to complete the touch up. This is a nice technique to cover up imperfect walls.
Get your rag ready and begin to paint!!!

How to Paint With Acrylics
How to Paint With Acrylics
Well first of all you are going to have to pick the right kinds of materials such as brushes, paints, stretched canvas etc. You need to buy the right kind of materials and also the best kind of materials. Then you have to buy brushes. Choose brushes that are suitable for acrylic paint, they should be either flat or round. Try buying brushes with natural hair, they will do much better in the long run and they will not leave bristles on the canvas. Look around and see if you can find good bargains in your local art supplier store. Again if you don’t know what your art supplier store is, just Google Michael’s or Joanne and check out their nearest location to your zip code. If you need inspiration or want to look at some sort of example of acrylic or oil art, check out paintings of flowers, abstract art, landscape and fantasy fineart, etc.
Okay now buy some acrylic paints, you also need to know your color wheel generally well before you start. Just know your basics such as yellow and blue make green etc. and you can figure out the rest by doing. Experimenting with colors will take a while but your results will be great in the end. Use good quality paints so the colors on your artwork will be vibrant. Also choose a good canvas. If you want a good piece or art you should probably try and find a stretched canvas that will maintain its look. You can also learn to stretch your own canvas, but that’s a huge hassle so just buy one from the store (they’re not that expensive especially if you find a good sale).
Decide what to paint. This is the most important part of the process. Again check out the type of original fine art that you like. For inspiration you can also look at some Contemporary Abstract Art Prints. Find a bright place with natural light. It should be somewhere in the basement or outside, a place that you are willing to get messy in. If not put newspapers on the ground but again my suggestion is using a place that you don’t mind getting dirty because accidents always happen. Also get a palette or a paper plate (the cheaper way) to mix all your colors as you paint. It’s much better to mix them on the plate before you put them on the canvas. Sketch basic main parts of the art work you are thinking of creating. Also start with your background first, paint your sky, wood, fields first before you concentrate on the details (back to front technique). Wait a while for those to dry a bit and then begin on the details (acrylic paints dry much faster than oil). In the end make sure you clean your brushes right away! If not the paint will dry and destroy those brushes.
These are first steps in the journey of painting Abstract …

How to Look at Art
How to Look at Art
Have you ever wondered what an Artist had in mind when he/she creates a work of Art? The Artist may indeed have strong feelings about what he/she is making to show the rest of the world. Is it important for you to know what he had in mind? Does that make it more enjoyable or less enjoyable?
Before I answer these questions I would like to suggest that Art, (referring now to visual Art) is created for a reaction to/for or against a person, place, thing, event, or even another period of time. Since the beginning of time, in the History of Art, there are many Movements which signify a kind of thought that was prevalent by the artist of that period.
Each period in History, produces art of the Culture and focus of that particular period. For instance during the Renaissance, art, literature, philosophy and architecture would focus on secular and humanistic aspects of society. In this European Art World the image was very realistic.
In sharp contrast, during our recent history, there was a school of painting known as Abstract Expressionism developed in the United States, specifically New York. These artists, broke away with a tradition, where a painting always had to have a recognizable image. They favored no recognizable image but rather made “the gesture” and the energy in the work of art the most important value. They were free to express their spontaneity and individual psyches.
So what does all this have to do with viewing a work of art. First of all we each come to view a work of art, no matter what the “history” of the work, with our own experiences and psyches. When we react it may bring up something pleasurable or not. If for instance we view an abstract work and it brings up a reaction, that may be enough in and of itself. However If we also know the History of the time it was made, that may also add to our enjoyment of the work.
So back to the original questions. One can seek enjoyment of viewing “art” on many levels. The more you know about the period and intention of the Artist, the more you may bring to the enjoyment of the art. However, more importantly, if the painting evokes a feeling, pleasant or not, or it speaks to a place inside you, that is enough. The Art indeed has done its job; that of allowing you to react!…
Different Arts for Different People
Different Arts for Different People
Have you ever wondered as to why one art form finds popularity with a certain segment of people, but may be totally unpopular for another set? Have you thought why the same art form, has both followers and critics in abundance? Take for instance the case of pop art itself. While this contemporary art form has a huge following and is fast being accepted by many, one does not cease to wonder at why the large criticism also exists. There are in fact many people, who will say that pop art is not art at all, and merely a low class replica. There is no truth in this belief however. What is true, is that different people respond differently to different forms of art. While some connect positively to one form, others react to it negatively. And this is what makes any form of art truly unique and communicative.
In this article we will discuss the diverse personalities of communities/ people and how they relate to the varied forms of art. While our deductions may not be totally true, we can come close to understanding the different ways in which art is understood.
Culturally ethnic: The ethnic groups of people often have strong religious and cultural beliefs. The art forms they believe and relate to are also thus very restricted. People from such cultural groups have grown up seeing and liking certain forms of art, and hence their ideals would be shaped in a certain way. They often would not relate to contemporary forms of art and may be critical of them.
Culturally extrovert: The culture or environment of a place often shapes the choices of people. In extrovert communities, where people are welcome to change and new ideas, contemporary forms of art as introduced by Warhol, Lichtenstein are much accepted and welcomed too.
People in grief: Art is commonly used in art therapy for healing, and for a good reason. People react positively to certain colours, and when shown pieces of art that are uplifting, they feel better too. In many such sessions, the subjects are asked to discuss the aspects of the art form before them, a process that has helped many come out of their sadness.
Thinkers and Feelers: An important personality trait that can also be identified is whether people are thinkers or feelers. Thinkers tend to use more of their minds and relate to the ideas in an art form. Feelers, on the other hand relate more to the emotions and feelings behind a particular work of art. Through their reactions, one can understand better as to what senses are more dominant.
Social standing and art perception: The social standing a person enjoys can also in many ways shape the kind of art people like. For people who rank high on the economy ladder, prestigious pieces of art are equivalent to high priced original artworks that they may or may not relate to. What matters more is that these pieces …

If you don’t want to be bugged and if your business doesn’t require clients coming to your workplace, then a couch and too many chairs aren’t necessary.
Above all your home office paint scheme is the most important. You don’t have to paint your walls to accomplish what you need. The color scheme you choose will set the mood for you entire work. It should not be taking lightly and can be accomplished with just a few pieces.
Establishing a good home workplace doesn’t require a lot of money, however it does require a lot of thought. You don’t need the nicest furniture or equipment, but you do need someplace where you can focus and be happy at. The energy that your home workplace gives off is the energy that you’ll put into your work. Don’t take this responsibility lightly because it’s important.…
Pattaya: Touring Liam’s Art Gallery
Pattaya: Touring Liam’s Art Gallery
As a tourist, most of us think of Pattaya as a place to lie on the sandy beach or to take a walk down Pattaya’s infamous Walking Street, but Pattaya has long been the home of a serious art gallery offering major international exhibitions, sales, and shows for local contemporary artists as well as for some traditional Thai artists as well. So for any visiting art-lover, then Liam’s Gallery is a must see.
Liam Ayudhkij is the owner of Liam’s Gallery, and he’s been collecting art here there for almost forty years. Liam is a forward-thinking kind of fellow, and believes in the value of contemporary Thai art, even though most others in the industry don’t. This phenomenon is well documented in the book “Flavours – Thai Contemporary Art” written by Steven Pettifor in 2010.
In his book, Steven writes on the craftsmanship of Thai contemporary art:”I do see it elsewhere in Asia, so it’s not necessarily different but there are different kinds of crafts that are brought into Thai art. Chusak Srikwan uses shadow puppetry, but he does things like modern politicians and symbols of corruption. Montri Toemsombat has used silk weaving and silk crafting in the past. There’s this attention to craft…”
And at Liam’s gallery, you can find the works of Chusak Srikwan as well as Montri Toemsombat and dozens of other contemporary artists who take their craft very, very seriously.
And with the interest in Thai contemporary artwork now on the rise, especially after the opening of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) a few years back, Liam’s Gallery has been the place to see what’s new and happening on the scene – from a national as well as local perspective.
Take for example, Andrew Groffman’s work that depicts local Pattayian portraits as you would find them: hanging out chatting with farangs, sleeping seductively in bed, or getting a quick bite to eat on the street. Andrew seems to specialize in Pattaya’s working girl, and has produced some stunning pop art portraits of beautiful behinds and bellies lit by the rising sunshine of the morning after.
Another interesting artist at Liam’s that predominately displays other parts of the human anatomy is Douglas Simonson, and his collection of Male Nude Prints. Simonson is one of Hawaii’s most famous of contemporary authors and artists, and this collection is quite revealing. And since Simonson does not have a gallery of his own, seeing his work at Liam’s is very convenient for anyone interested in buying or appreciating some leading male erotica.
But not all works at Liam’s Gallery is as titillating; the gallery tries to showcase new and emerging Thai artists such as Asawinnee Wanjing, who takes inkjet printouts of traditional Thai images and hand touches them using a process called Giclee.
Another example of an emerging Thai artist showcased at Liam’s is Danaiphat Lersputtitrakan, whose arresting acrylics on canvas have won him numerous awards both in Thailand and in the UAE. His …

Embellish Your Home Or Office With the Fine Arts
Embellish Your Home Or Office With the Fine Arts
Decorating the home or office with artwork pieces should be easy, right? Go to a cheap one-stop store, pick out a cheap art prints of a bowl of fruit or vase full of flowers and hang it on the wall. That is all you need, right. Wrong! Decorating the home or office with any art is about more than just hanging up a cheap, reproduction art printed on cardboard. It is about setting the mood, creating an environment, and sometimes it is about conversation.
Canvas art is probably the most popular form of art decor hanging on most walls that surround us. There are so many different styles and subject matter to choose from as well as so many different price ranges. So how do you choose what is right for you? Do you display Monet or Manet? To some degree, there is an easy answer to what you should or should not hang on your walls. If you like it, it is right for you. This little rule of thumb works great in your own home. However, if you are decorating an office space you need to keep your customers/clients and other employees in mind.
When you walk into your bank, what kind of artwork pieces are hanging on the walls? Or what about your doctor’s office, your hair salon, your Lawyer’s office, or even your stockbroker’s office? What decor item did you hang on your dorm room wall in college? It is all art, but it is also all relative to who is hanging it and why. If you hang art in a space that is accessed by the public, you generally want wall canvas art that is not going to scare the public away. You also do not want your framed art picture to be offensive.
You can pick something more traditional that does not provoke much feeling or emotion, such as the vase of flowers, but is still nice to look at. Or you can pick a piece of contemporary art that doesn’t really look like anything but creates a calm atmosphere, maybe even a bit of reflection thrown in for interest, something that is totally open to interpretation.
When decorating your own home, the choices are limitless yet more powerful. This is your space, your personality, your chance to express yourself. If you like that framed art picture of a vase of flowers from the office, hang it up! If you just love abstract art picture, do not be afraid to display it. If the cheap canvas art you bought at a yard sale is your thing, dress it up with a fancy frame and show it off. Even if your best friend painted something for you and you only like it because they are the one who painted it, find a special place for it and give it a home.
Art with a sentimental value or a story attached to it is always a great …
Buying Contemporary Art for Your Home
Buying Contemporary Art for Your Home
For many homeowners their ultimate dream is to buy contemporary art to hang on the walls of their beloved home. Buying contemporary art can enhance your home as well as add a feeling of accomplishment and culture. However, for many of people the concept of buying art can be a little intimidating.
Buying contemporary art doesn’t need to be a daunting experience. It should be a fun and exciting experience, where you have the opportunity to view and purchase a wide range of work by both well-established and new emerging artists. What a lot of people find intimidating about buying art is the concept of what is ‘good’ art and what is ‘bad’ are. No one wants to be accused of investing in worthless art.
The important thing to remember when you’re looking at buying contemporary art is that you’re buying the piece for yourself and your home. We generally buy art that we see as an extension or representation of ourselves, our ideals and what’s important in our lives. When buying contemporary art you should always choose art that makes you feel good and will enhance or add to the atmosphere of your home.
The best way you can ensure you’ll buy contemporary art for your home that is both complementary of your home and enduring in value is to first spend some time looking at different artists and their work. Select a few pieces that you really like and see if you can identify some commonalities in the pieces. It may be something obvious like the use of colors, scenes or textures. You may notice that you are drawn to a particular medium of art, like acrylic paintings or glass art.
By looking at a range of art you will start to develop your ‘eye’ for art and your particular tastes and interests. However, like fashion, your tastes in buying contemporary art may change in another one or two months. So when you’re looking to make a larger art investment ensure that the piece you choose is well suited to your core taste and is not extremely over-the-top or dramatically different to your usual art preference – you may later come to regret the purchase.
You don’t necessarily need to buy from a well-established artist. You also don’t need to be any kind of ‘talent scout’ looking for the next big thing when looking to buy from new and emerging artists. The reason many people buy from emerging artists is the opportunity to own a quality piece of art to hang in their home at a fraction of the cost of established artist counterparts. If you’re purely looking to decorate your home with original art, it is well worth your time doing some research on the Internet and attending local art fairs.
If you’re looking to buy contemporary art as an investment, you will find it helpful to visit art galleries and enlist the help of a professional art adviser. Art advisers …
Where to Find Ideas for Abstract Paintings
Where to Find Ideas for Abstract Paintings
Ideas for abstract paintings are as numerous as clouds in a winter sky, skittering across the landscape of our mind’s eye. In fact, they may even get away if you do not write them down! So far, there is no immediate way of painting what our mind holds directly onto the canvas, so we must use the middle man of the artist’s skills. The artist may even be ourselves, but whoever winds up doing the final version of someone’s artistic vision, that person will have had a grounding education in abstract painting. Form and color, texture and execution, the painting that is abstract may speak more easily to the viewer than a representational painting, because these elements touch our emotions more directly than with the intervening persona of the mind, which must interpret each figure in a representational piece in a time-consuming way. An abstract painting goes right for the inner core of the viewer.
Do you have a favorite color? Then the general wisdom is to discard that favorite in lieu of another color. You may use your absolute favorite in small doses on the painting or as a trim color in the room in which your painting resides, because to overwhelm your scheme for your painting with your favorite color runs the very real risk of making you bored with that color, and you don’t want that. By keeping it to a minimum, you preserve the favorite as sort of a surprise treat, which is an old trick used by experienced interior decorators. Rest assured, you will have the expert advice of an artist and will not make any wrong steps in choosing the form of your color scheme. Ideas for abstract paintings will spring forth from both of you, creating a synergy that is most productive.
The search for shapes to use in an abstract painting can be as simple as searching the internet for a set of photos of the natural world. Rather than identifying what the object is, look for shapes that speak to you as you simplify the elements in the photograph, alternate colors or focus on a small part of the image. It’s easier to begin with something ‘real’ as the basis for an abstract painting than it is to start from scratch. Consider the spiral of a seashell and work from there, perhaps thinking of it as a tiny maze, a way into the very core of the shell. Who knows what we’ll find there?
It’s done, you have the idea. Now how to implement it? Do you commission a painting from a reputable artist or take on the delightful task of recreating your vision yourself? After making the decision and gathering your strength to firm your resolve, start out boldly. Do you see it as a large piece, a small piece or a framed or un-framed piece? If you take on this aspect a little bit at a time, it will not overwhelm you …
Zen Art – Come Be Enlightened
Zen Art – Come Be Enlightened
Zen art emphasizes the essence of the subject, in that a statue of a sculpted marble ball may be the earth, a marble, a beach ball, or a falling tear. Once the artist decides that the subject is a tear, he may act in a flurry of motion, dizzying in its intensity as he hacks and hews at the marble, grinding it to a smooth polish as he journeys on his way to completion. To the Zen artist, deciding on a subject is well over half the battle of finishing a piece of art. This may well be the part of the process that takes up the most time. In fact, the subject may be reached upon deep meditation, as the artist probes his mind and soul for a subject that speaks of his inmost thoughts and intentions.
For the Zen artist, writing or calligraphy is not merely to convey words, but is an act of beautification in itself. Think of these marks upon a paper or your computer monitor: they convey an article about Zen art, do they not? But aren’t they also made up of circles and curves, angles and lines, something of a work of art? Even the font chosen for this article makes a statement; for example, these words are not printed in hard-to-read Old English Gothic or swirling Pristina script. No, they are in the font that is pleasing to the Western eye, the most legible for the purpose. In this way, you have skimmed the purpose of Zen art, to arrange things in a beautiful and meaningful way, perhaps unusual to you. Sometimes it is called ‘thinking outside the box.’
To say that Zen art is simple is a conundrum, for the media itself may be as elemental as a simple stroke of a calligraphy stylus in black ink that encompasses the meaning of ‘mountain slope.’ Art that grows from this simple stroke may be as profound as a depiction of a guru atop the solitude of his mountain peak, communing with his soul and Nature, or as simplistic as a mountain stream running downhill in a drawing devoid of any human subject. The title of the piece cannot be overemphasized, because the artist’s intention may be gleaned from a one-word name such as ‘Empathy.’ How to depict such a noun that is loaded with meaning is the work of the Zen artist as he links his own understanding of the term to his art. ‘Empathy’ may be one person holding another as he weeps, it may be a doll into whose deaf ears a child pours all her ambitions and tender words of love, and it may be as commonplace as a person viewing a tragedy on a newscast and reaching out with her feelings to hope for aid for the afflicted people. So many complex emotions may be conveyed by one simple word in Zen art.
The distillation of a subject into Zen art is not …
Guide to Buying Art Online
Guide to Buying Art Online
‘t the Internet wonderful? With a click of a mouse it can bring the whole world into your living room, it facilitates shopping, communications, research and interaction with people from around the world.
Buying art online has become very popular in the last 10 years. Buying contemporary art straight from the artist’s website means you no longer have to pay ridiculous prices for a piece of art, due to the elimination of the middle-man, in this case, the art gallery.
Whilst in most cases this is a enjoyable experience and investing in art has been proven to usually generate a profit – there are also pitfalls that you need to be aware I will list some of them:A
1. Always buy from a seller which accepts returns and is based in the same country you are! In some cases when you receive the artwork purchased, it will look different in reality than it looked on the screen. You may be disappointed, so you should always have the option to return it. But what good is this option to you if you are in UK and you need to post the artwork back Thailand? The postage for an artwork can be very expensive and most sellers will not cover this cost for you. This is also true for any item you buy online, so if the option of returning the item is not viable then don’t buy.
2. Don’t buy un-stretched canvases posted to you in a roll. They may appear to be cheaper initially but by the time you manage to find a stretching service and have paid for it you will realize that it cost you almost the same as a painting sold on a stretched canvas. Also, a painted canvas loses its elasticity, so it can’t be stretched properly on a wooden frame. Too often I have heard unhappy buyers complaining: ‘I have a pile of rolled canvases at home I don’t know what to do with?…’
3. Buying paintings from a websites that offers you clear pictures of the artwork and also detailed photos (close-ups) will ensure that you buy the actual painting and not just an ‘image’. Some websites will sell an image and the artist will only paint the painting after it was purchased.
4. I also don’t recommend buying an artwork as a present for someone else, unless you know for sure that the person likes it, or it is considered to be a good investment. Art is highly subjective, and just like in a restaurant, you wouldn’t order food for someone else, if you want them to enjoy their meal, you can’t decide for them what to hang on the wall in their home.
So baring in mind these few tips, purchasing a quality artwork is probably one of the most solid and enjoyable investments you will make, one that will bring joy to you and your family, perhaps for generations.…
Should You Paint or Varnish Your Boat, and Why?
Should You Paint or Varnish Your Boat, and Why?
Yay!!! You’ve now completed construction of your boat! Good job on sticking to it! Now you’re wondering whether you should paint your boat, varnish it or maybe a combination of the two.
Paint seems to be a much more durable substance than varnish is. Varnish does do a good job at masking any rough surfaces, but paint is more likely to protect the epoxy and wood the best, which ultimately should be your aim.
If you find yourself torn between the two, then it could be a good idea to varnish the interior of the boat and paint the exterior.
If you plan on storing your boat in a place that is protected from the elements, then varnishing your boat is still a viable option. If, however your boat will be outside and unprotected from Mother Nature I would stick with paint again because of its durability.
It is quite clear, that I am a proponent of using paint over varnish. If you’re still unsure, find and talk to other boat builders and owners and find out what they are doing; as a means to achieve peace of mind.
Regardless of which way you go, always follow the manufacturer’s directions exactly to get the best results.
The key to building a sturdy building is to have a sturdy foundation. The same can be said here. The key to having a great looking boat is very much dependent on your prep work. Your planking surface must be as smooth as possible, so sand like you’ve never sanded before! It’s best if you use a very fine steel wool to do so.
Because you will be sanding quite a bit, make sure you use a high quality primer that will be able to withstand all the sanding. If you won’t be spray painting your boat, then your best alternative is to use rollers. Stay away from using a brush on the larger surfaces, and perhaps keep then for smaller touch up or detailing jobs.
Why? The reason being that each coat of paint should be very smooth and thin. Using a paint brush defeats the purpose since paint brushes tend to hold too much paint and you will have thicker and less smooth coats, which again is not what you want.…

As a child he always found himself sitting is all alone and watch the sunlight flow all the way through the blinds as dust element where noticeable through the eyes hop and jazz in the rays of light entering inside his parent’s living room.
“I lost and found myself as I watched the light stream into my parents’ living room. Somehow, I knew what I was experiencing was truth.”- Gregory Garrett
This solitary age was vital in his progress as a very good artist in the years to follow. During his early career as an artist Garrett spent most of his time studying and admiring the famous art works of painters such as Picasso, Caravaggio, Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Van Gough. Praying For a Solution to Your Hemorrhoids?
Praying For a Solution to Your Hemorrhoids?
If you have suffered the pain of hemorrhoids you wouldn’t even want to wish it on to your worst of enemies. The pain can certainly be horrifying and can leave you standing for a long while. Any amount of sitting or lying down only aggravates that pain. Hemorrhoids go on to be the worst affliction to have ever hit mankind. People try all kinds of over the counter drugs as well as prescribed medicines to get rid of hemorrhoids. Little do they realize that what they buy is not a long term cure? It is a cure that will be a short term fix only until the next attack of hemorrhoids.
The way hemorrhoids happen is the occurrence of swollen veins and blood vessels in the most delicate part of one’s body, the rectum and the anus. These swollen veins can sometimes pop out and bleed and that is why these hemorrhoids are so painful. The protruding hemorrhoids need to be pushed back in and this can be a greatly painful chore. After this you will be left yelping in pain for sure. The tubes of ointment and creams that one gets are just temporary hemorrhoids pain relief and that is all they are. They are not the kind of drugs that will help you get rid of hemorrhoids for a lifetime. Thereafter, if you were to calculate the number of dollars and time and effort that you end up spending on hemorrhoids without any particular impact or objective met at the end of it, it is certainly a great waste of time.
Even before you have finished the tube, you will notice that the hemorrhoids are back and this time round with a vengeance. Not only will you end up wasting a whole lot of money on this kind of hemorrhoids treatment but will also be left with a huge amount of chemicals in your body. This in turn will lead to further nasty after effects. Now, you will not only have the pain of hemorrhoids to deal with but the nausea and headaches that are left behind from the chemicals that you have unnecessarily exposed yourself to. How you wish that there were some natural remedy to hemorrhoids. Or permanent remedies that will forever take the pain of hemorrhoids off your backside. Long term hemorrhoids treatment certainly sounds like an extremely farfetched thing at his point in time.…
Are Contemporary Art Investments Worth It?
Are Contemporary Art Investments Worth It?
Contemporary art is, with very few exceptions, much cheaper than the work of past masters. This is true of generally all works of art, and especially of paintings and sculptures. Hence art investments are considered by some lucrative, since you don’t need that much money to start them. Yet as it often happens with investments, things are not as simple of that – there are some points to consider before you decide to invest in contemporary art.
Investing In Contemporary Art Is Not Necessarily Cheap
Good art, the one that has the potential to significantly increase in value in time, is never cheap. Contemporary art is no exception. Truth be told, only a limited number of current works of art are expected to become highly valuable in the decades to come. These are the best to invest in, yet of course they are for the most part already highly valuable, not to mention close to impossible to acquire, having already privileged possessors. The remaining art pieces, the affordable ones, don’t have a place in art history guaranteed, and investing in them will always be a bit of a gamble. Hence safe art investments are not at all cheap.
Invest In Contemporary Art If You’re Uncertain About the Economy
It’s generally agreed that investments in art are good for keeping your money safe during periods when there are great fluctuations in the economy. Good art is timeless, and its value almost never depreciates suddenly. Good art is no exception, yet note that safe investments are only those made in enduring pieces that are sure to be talked about in a few decades. Knowing how to spot these rare pieces is an art in itself.
Investing In Contemporary Art Will Not Make You Rich Overnight
It takes an art savvy with a lot of money to spend and extremely favorable market conditions to make a lot of money from an art investment. Most investments bring moderate gains, and this over a number of years. So, if you want to invest in contemporary art you don’t only need a nice budget, but also a lot of patience. If you’re not sure to possess the latter, then art investments may not be for you.
In conclusion, contemporary art investment are worth it, especially if they are used as a means to safe guard already acquired wealth, rather than for making a lot of money quickly.…
Miro Paintings – Joan Miro’s Famous Abstract Paintings & Biography
Miro Paintings – Joan Miro’s Famous Abstract Paintings & Biography
Joan Miro was a Spanish painter and sculptor, born in Barcelona. His art movements included Surrealism, Dada, Personal and Experimental. Miro had an illustrious art career, with many famous paintings that could be included here. However, in order to keep the article concise, it is abbreviated to just Miro’s best oil paintings. and art prints
The Tilled Field, was Miro’s first Surrealist masterpiece and used a series of objects in a busy, complex layout similar in some senses to some works by Wassily Kandinsky. Miro represented Spain in The Homage to Surrealism exhibition alongside Salvador Dali, Enrique Tabara and Eugenio Granell. Miro also created a sculpture set with accompanying ceramics for the garden of the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France.
Miro’s tapestry for the World Trade Center in New York City was one of the most expensive items lost during the terrorist destruction 30 years later. It had been on display in this iconic building for many years and represented Miro’s best work in the field of crafts. Despite this, Miro’s art remains in prominent places all around the world, including US and Spain, with some Miro-inspired architecture on show in Barcelona, his hometown.
Joan Miro’s art is known to have influenced many abstract and surrealist artists including American Arshile Gorky. The quality and success of Joan Miro’s painting is shown in the fact that he remains popular even today, particularly throughout Spain and the rest of western Europe. Alongside Miro’s traditional paintings, he wrote several successful books and also gained success with large murals and glass sculptures. Feel free to use the resources below to discover even more about this famous Spanish abstract artist.…
Why Acrylic Paintings And Techniques Are Superior To Others
Why Acrylic Paintings And Techniques Are Superior To Others
Many artists use acrylics with a grayish or grayish-blue hue as an undercoat because this adds depth to the finished work. If an artist uses this technique, then he can have a number of paintings in various stages of completion, thus fueling the synergy of his work: Work A, for instance, may be nearing completion and lacks only the addition of shadows to the subject, while Work B has the requisite background but needs the foreground fleshed out more, while Work C is in the first stages of underpainting as the artist searches for just the right colors to bring out the richness of the projection final appearance of the work. It is a system that prolific artists use and it works well for the artistic temperament, as inspiration strikes at various times and rarely does a painting become the entire focus of an artist’s day, start to finish.
Acrylics do offer the advantage of a fast drying time, so that an artist paints and waits perhaps thirty minutes for a layer of average thickness to dry. If the paint on the palette dries out quicker than the artist likes, he may construct a simple wet palette, consisting of a flat-bottomed basin, a layer of wet paper towels, and a piece of parchment on top, as the parchment is slow to absorb water and thus is used as the keeper of the workspace palette, that is, the particular paints unique to that individual painting. The paints may stay wet as long as a few days. As the layers grow in complexity, the paint seems to reveal little by little the artistic vision until at last, the finished work stands. Now comes the final drying time, and then the work is ready for shipping or placing in the gallery to be admired and purchased by a lucky someone. The timing of the marketing of a piece is key and if the general timeframe of drying is known, then the artist and client alike will have a general idea of when the acrylic painting will be completed. This makes for a pleasant client and artist relationship on both sides.
At the mundane end of the scale, acrylics do not have the overwhelming fumes that oil paints exude; in a closed environment such as a studio, this will be important to the artist and client as well, as they do not breathe in the pungent aroma. A further plus is that acrylics clean up with water, rather than solvent, likewise less smelly for the studio environment. All of these advantages point to acrylics paint being the best, most effect way to bring a piece of art to life.…
Acrylic Techniques – Using Watered-Down Paint
Acrylic Techniques – Using Watered-Down Paint
If you are an abstract artist you can achieve some really beautiful results using watered-down acrylic paint. This is a techniques that I have been using for a number of years and I have sold many paintings using this painting technique.
The result depends upon how liquid you make the paint and of course your choice of colours but it can resemble ‘marbled’ paintings as well as swirling seas and sands.
So first of all you need to decide which colors you wish to use. You can check another of my articles on basic color theory if you wish to know which colours go best together.
Once you have decided this you need some empty plastic bottles in which to mix the paint. Make up at least 5 different colors to give the painting some variety. It is a good idea to test the colors first on a spare canvas to check that they go well together. Have a good variety of contrasting depths of colour.
Water down the paint in an approximate 1 part paint to 1 part water mixture. You will really need to test this out to see what gives the best results. If you make the paint too dilute then it will just run into the centre of the canvas. If you make it too thick it will not mix well with the other colors.
When you have mixed the paint, pour it onto the canvas in an approximate pattern of how you want it to look. Once you have put all of the colours on the canvas, use a spatula or something similar to make sure all of the paint joins and that no canvas shows through. You can then slightly tilt the canvas to get some patterns into the paint. Keep tilting in various directions until you have a pattern you are happy with.
If you have used too much paint and it is all pooling in the middle, you have a couple of options. First you can pour the paint off one corner of the canvas. This can give some interesting results so it is not like you are wasting the painting. You can keep the paint for another time. The other is to use a syringe to take off some of the paint. Leave the painting to dry at least overnight before varnishing it and edging it.
This is a great way to make beautiful abstract paintings especially if you make a great choice of colors.…
Why Buy Contemporary Art?
Why Buy Contemporary Art?
Some people are scared of contemporary art. They look at a painting, sculpture, or installation, and they don’t know what it means. Sometimes, they don’t even know what it’s about. Since the unknown is scary, they become afraid of the contemporary art itself.
However, there are many reasons to buy art to showcase in your home or office, and very few reasons to be scared of it. Once you understand the contemporary art movement, you’ll be able to avoid fear and instead enjoy this medium of expression.
Find a Piece that Fits Your Space in your home or office
When you choose to buy art, you’ll have the opportunity to find the piece that best fits your space and your lifestyle before you make your purchase. Contemporary art comes in all colors, forms, and is made out of all sort of materials. Whether you’re looking for a painting, a sculpture, a collage, or something else, you’ll be able to find a contemporary artist who makes what you need.
In addition, contemporary art deals with all sorts of subjects. Sometimes, you’ll have to research a work to find out what it’s about. However, it’s often pretty clear what the artist is trying to say. If you find a piece that says something you agree with, then you can buy a piece the not only matches your decor but your ideals as well.
Get to Know Local Artists
Buying contemporary art is a great way to learn about and even get to know a local, Australian artist. Many of the people who make contemporary art might even live in your city or town, but you may not hear about them unless you go looking for new art for your walls.
Once you start your search, though, you may find yourself welcomed into a community of artists who want to tell you about their work. Most artists are happy to talk to customers, and will explain whatever you want to know about their work, their process, and more. You might even find one of these people becoming a friend.
If you’re looking for a piece that complements your space, suits your personality, and that comes from an artist you can get to know, look no further than Australian art. Find a gallery near you, or look at one online. Be picky, and don’t buy any contemporary art until you find exactly what you’re looking for.…
“No Paint” Decorating Ideas For an Apartment
“No Paint” Decorating Ideas For an Apartment
Living in a rented apartment where your lease prohibits you from making any changes to the wall color makes customizing your living quarters a bit of a challenge. One option that you have is agreeing in writing to return your apartment’s paint color to its original state before moving out; some landlords will go for this. You can, however, decorate your apartment without using paint.
Removable Wall Covering Since you cannot paint your walls in colors that best suit your personality, the next best thing is fabric or starch wallpaper. Fabric and starch wallpaper options have really expanded in recent years, and you can literally find any imaginable print or solid paper that appeals to you and coordinates with your decorating theme. The technique of applying this type of wallpaper is quite simple, and it is totally removable and will not damage the wall beneath. This is a great way to add color and texture to your apartment walls, or to cover up ugly, unsightly walls. You can dress up every area of your apartment, from the entrance to the bedrooms, with removable wall coverings – and never have to worry about forfeiting your security deposit for damages.
ShelvingYou can also fill your wall space up by thinking tall when it comes to shelving. This will have the added effect of creating a visual appeal while also giving you tons of storage or display options. Don’t overcrowd your shelving, but carefully arrange the objects that you wish to display on each shelf. The eye tends to flow over a shelf in a pattern that is s-shaped, so keep that in mind when setting up your items on display.
Folding ScreensYou can also add texture to an area of the room by placing a folding screen in front of a wall. Folding screens can be found in nearly any style imaginable, from chrome folding screens for ultra modern decor to Shoji screens for Asian inspired themes. The folding screen is especially beneficial in a smaller, studio type apartment where space and privacy are at a minimal.
Wall Hangings and MuralsWall hangings and murals are also great for covering a wall without the necessity of painting the wall. There are tons of choices when it comes to wall hangings, or you can create your own with a favorite quilt. Simply attach a sleeve to the back of the quilt with needle and thread, and then insert a rod. Voila! You have an instant wall hanging that will give your apartment a shabby chic appeal.
No-Nail DecoratingIf your apartment lease’s “no paint” clause also contains a “no nails” clause, then you can still decorate your walls. There are some amazing removable wall hooks on the market, some of them made by the 3M Corporation, which will allow you to easily hang most sizes of artwork, prints, and wall art. These hooks adhere to the wall securely without leaving behind any type of icky residue when you …
Lea Kelley: An Abstract Expansionist
Lea Kelley: An Abstract Expansionist
Last month I wrote a brief introductory article about a wonderful Bellingham, Wa. artist named Lea Kelley. She is active in her community, is a delightful and insightful person who has proven herself to not only be a very educated and technical artist, but also as someone who thinks in deep and abstract ways about the world, and our place in it. Kelley has described herself as an abstract expansionist. This is intriguing, so while there are many other things that could be said about Kelley, her art, her philosophy, or her observations, the thing I want to focus on is this idea of being an abstract expressionist.
Abstract Expansionism is a term worthy of exploration, not only because it isn’t something we are very familiar with, but because of the implications it carries. It is difficult to pin down exactly what we are to make of the terms, but I think worth a try.
A picture of a maple tree is a picture of a maple tree. It is not an abstraction in and of itself. It represents something real in the real world. Interpreting such a picture is simple. We look at it, we connect with what we know about maple trees, and we move on. To look at a picture that for some reason makes us think of, or reminds us of, a tree is quite another proposition. It requires interpretation.
Interpreting an abstraction requires us to draw on many different things; things like: personal and shared experiences, memories, intuitions, beliefs about the world, emotional highs and lows, betrayals, loves, and our expectations about the world around us. Those sorts of things are like tools that help us interpret depictions that don’t actually look like anything in the real world. We see the figures and colors, we process, we conclude. There is no right or wrong.
Abstractions require us to think. They require that we try to connect with those parts of self that often go unrevealed, or even buried under layers of everyday cares or thoughtless humdrum activity. Lea Kelley has discovered that through abstract art, those underlying aspects, or connections, can be brought to the forefront and thereby translated into real value for each observer, as well as for the larger community that we are all a part of. This expansion of the way we interpret, to the way we think and act, is perhaps one of the ways we can best understand what it means to be an abstract expansionist. To look at a Lea Kelley piece it to experience it. It is an enlivening experience. Her pieces, like her, are both complicated yet simple, challenging yet freeing.
Lea Kelley paints something that she wants to represent, but has absolutely no control over how an observer is going to interpret what is painted. This is something she is comfortable with because it lets others apply, or expand, their own experiences to the art. This metaphoric expansion of art is …
How To Paint A Stone Fireplace
How To Paint A Stone Fireplace
If it appears that your stone fireplace already needs some makeover, then you may have to consider applying a fresh coat of paint on it to give it a refurbished look. The fireplace is normally the focal point of the room and as such, it has to be the best part of the room. Thus, when your stone fireplace is already going on the dreary and old side, then it is imperative that you seriously consider your best options in order to perk up this hole on the wall.
Consider Safety Requirements
Before you even start planning for the repainting of your stone fireplace, it is necessary that you go through the building safety codes to ensure that all important provisions are complied with. When you are planning to apply a fresh coat of paint on your stone fireplace, it is imperative that you take into account the safety requirements for paint materials and other combustible materials that you are going to use on your stone fireplace and the immediate surroundings.
It is also a must that you consult with your home improvement center or paint supplier regarding the use of paint products – paints, primers, etc. – as well as the appropriate tools and equipment for this kind of home improvement job.
When planning to paint your stone fireplace, you have to remember that the removal of paint coatings on stucco, stone and majority of masonry surfaces is extremely difficult. You may have to resort to sandblasting if you need to undo a painting job. Thus, proper planning is extremely critical when it comes to this type of home improvement project. You really have to make sure that you really want to do the repainting job on this hole on the wall and that such home improvement job seamlessly blends with the other design elements of the room. In addition to this, you may also need to do some practice run to ensure that you are doing the job in the right manner.
Paint Color for your Stone Fireplace
One of the best choices would be to choose a paint color for your fireplace that is the similar to the color of the walls. You may also choose a color that is in direct contrast to the dominant color of the room. Whatever your final choice of color, it is highly recommended that you discuss the color options with your paint supplier or your home improvement contractor or consultant. They can help you decide on the tools, paint products, shades, hues and tones that are appropriate for your stone fireplace.
Preparing your Stone Fireplace for the Painting Job
Before you start with the painting job, it is necessary that you protect the immediate sections of the room, and these include the floor and walls and other fixtures that may be affected by overspray and drips. The coverage largely depends on the type of paint that you are using for the home improvement job …

Precision And Neatness Counts In Geometrical Art
Precision And Neatness Counts In Geometrical Art
What a cool head it must take to produce geometrical art! The neat lines and varying sizes of the blocks of color used would need the planning requisite to making a mosaic piece, all squares and rectangles figured out far in advance to suit the overall view of the design. If not for a straightedge, the precision would be impossible, for these patterns exist in nature, but in the form of fractals, crystal formations that beautify the microscopic world in their mixture of simplicity and complexity. From the elegant angles and swooping curlicues of Islamic calligraphy to the blocked out style of a Mondrian, geometrical art has an appeal all its own.
Cool and clean, the lines appeal to our sense of order as they form the painting into neat segments, each with a varying border within the main border of the canvas. The segments thereby formed may be filled in with color or remain pristinely white in a well-thought out use of negative space. An experienced artist knows that geometrical art does not overwhelm with bold asymmetrical shapes and colors, but appeals more to our intellectual side, the side that depends on order for rational thought. By its very nature, geometrical art guides our thoughts into regimented rows of ideas, each idea leading into the next in an orderly progression. Mathematics in the world of art are used similarly as they are in the world of music, to form disciplined sets in a medium of expression that can too easily turn chaotic.
Chaos is something that geometrical art lacks; in fact, it has often been thought of as the antithesis of expressionism, which has its definitive basis in an artist feeling emotions and expressing them on canvas. Geometrical art uses rationality as a basis for art, solving problems of engineering as the artist fits one segment after another onto the canvas, neither too crowded nor too sparse in their placement. The efficient artist has planned far in advance of the actual painting of the lines and use of whatever color he chooses; he has a grid or similar scheme, measured infinitely and finely to the desired conclusion. Planning pays off as the piece takes shape without the slightest hint of chaos.
When you choose geometrical art as your selection, you are choosing a genre that has roots in antiquity, as the Islamic artists who were denied the depiction of living subjects sought to convey meaning in angles and lines, curves and circles, all from the rarefied world of mathematics. How very successful they were in their designs of mosques and arabesques, intricate tracings that have stood the test of time to our present day admiration. Not only does the arabesque template fulfill the artist’s soul of creativity, it answers the challenge of what to portray when your heart yearns to produce art, but has strictures placed upon it. Art will be produced anyway and it seems to be the nature of the …
Exterior Painting – Preparing Your Home For Painting
Exterior Painting – Preparing Your Home For Painting
Exterior painting of residential homes is a large undertaking and should be completed by a professional painter. However, should you decide to tackle this as a do-it-yourself project there are a few things you should do to make the job look professional. The key to success is in the preparation.
There are two very important things to keep in mind while you plan your painting project. First, track the weather and do not try to paint when the temperature goes below fifty degrees. It is also important to remember that rain will make a real mess out of your paint project. Also, beware of direct sunlight. Direct sunlight will cause the new paint to blister and it may leave marks where the paint has dried too fast. To prevent these problems, try to paint on the side of the house that is in the shade where possible. Take your time, do your preparation steps carefully and remember that the neighbors are watching.
The second thing to consider when painting your exterior is the exterior surface. Different preparation work, paint, etc needs to be used for stucco, metal, masonry or wood. The paint store that you purchase your paint and supplies from should have good advice about the correct products for your project. Any quality paint supply store will have knowledgeable staff that are eager to answer your questions.
Any surface that you are preparing for paint needs to be returned to prime condition before new paint is applied. All surfaces need to be cleaned with a high-pressure sprayer and then left to dry completely. Old loose paint or any paint that has blistered, cracked or is chipping must be removed down to the bare surface. Using drop cloths as you go along will make it much easier to catch all the paint chips and debris as you scrape it from the project. If you are not satisfied with your surface it may be time for a licensed professional to come in and sandblast the area.
Once the surface of your project has been cleared, you will need to look for any cracks, gouges and holes from screws or nails and patch them. Places like corners, seams and where siding and trim meet will need to be caulked. Please note, that where the shingles and siding overlap each other no caulk is needed. High quality caulks for exterior jobs will bond like glue and will be long lasting. Automotive epoxy filler can be used in extreme problem areas even if it is a woodwork project.
Any spots that are a high gloss or really rough will need to be sanded lightly. Paint needs to have something to grab onto as you apply it, so the surface needs to be roughed up slightly.
Prior to painting, make sure the surface is free of dust and dirt and completely dry. Remove any electrical covers, light fixtures, plumbing outlets, house numbers and especially the screens before …
Should I Invest In Contemporary Art, Gold, or Fine Wine?
Should I Invest In Contemporary Art, Gold, or Fine Wine?
It’s not easy to decide whether you should invest in contemporary art, gold, or fine, especially if you’re just starting. Ideally, it’s a good idea to have an investment portfolio as diverse as possible, yet that’s also hard to do when first starting.
Invest in Gold If You Want to Protect Your Assets
Generally, investments in gold are not thought to have that much potential to bring in loads of money right away, but are rather regarded as ideal investments for protecting your possessions. Gold has been, is, and will continue to be for years to come highly valuable. So individuals wishing to withstand economic turmoil can convert their assets into gold, knowing that the price of the precious metal is unlikely to decrease substantially. Gold is considered a fairly safe investment, its value being constantly on the rise, as demand grows and production dwindles.
Invest in gold especially if you have a large quantity of highly valuable assets whose future value is doubtful.
Invest in Contemporary Art If You Want Both Protection And Revenues
Alongside fine wine investments, contemporary art investments are one of the most tricky to pull of. Yet they can be highly rewarding, not only financially, but also spiritually. The thing is you have to enjoy art, and to have an eye that spots good art, the only one which is worth investing in. To invest in contemporary art you do need money, yet comparatively less than with other types of investment, say gold for example. The wonderful thing about art investments is that you can make a lot of money from a piece which you have previously purchased at a bargain. Of course this is easier said than done. Ultimately, having a knack for art is a must if you want to invest in contemporary art profitably.
Invest in Fine Wine if You Are Willing At Any Moment To Drink Your Wine
Generally safe and profitable, fine wine investments are increasingly popular especially in the UK. The revenues from such investments have almost tripled between 2005 and 2010, indicating a healthy market mostly unaffected by the economic downturn. Yet fine wine investing is not easy to carry out: it requires a deep knowledge of wine makers and their bottles, buyers, traders, and insiders. You can invest in fine wine with fewer risks than in most other types of alternative investments, but this only if you’re a wine lover who will be just as happy drinking his own fine wine as selling it (in case the investment goes bad).…
Original Oil Paintings Have Been Lost But Never Forgotten
Original Oil Paintings Have Been Lost But Never Forgotten
Oil painting is known as an form of art that traces back centuries and was used as a means of decoration for such things as famous estates, castles and also the home of some commoners. Many very famous artist of their time used oil painting to help capture scenes throughout history, politics, religion and art. So many of these original oil paintings can be seen to this day in hundreds of museums around the globe.
It is said that oil painting has sadly become an art that was lost in time and a true skillful artist who is well versed with oil painting techniques is not really as common. Anyone can oil paint no matter if the person has education, experience or has any skill or not.
Long before cameras were invented people would pay an artist to paint a portrait of someone for a wedding anniversary gift, a birthday or as any unique gift for just about any other special occasion. With this type of painting it required a person to sit for many hours as the artist would then try to capture a scene as good as possible. The process proved to be quite tiresome for both the artist and the subject of the portrait.
European painters during the 15th century were the ones who were credited for the invention of painting on wooden panels with oil media. Also during the 15th century oil was made the painting medium along with exploring several uses of glazes and layers which was then followed by many others in Northern Europe.
Most paintings back then were on wood and it was at the end of the 15th century that the canvas became much more popular. It was less expensive and easier to carry around. The popularity of this type of painting began to spread as it went on through Italy in the north, with Venice during the late 15th century and by the year 1540 the older method of painting on a panel with tempera became extinct, no one really used it except for the Italians who did continue to use fresco for many wall paintings.
With modern technology portrait painting was nearly obliterated any need for sitting in the same position for several hours at a time. The newer digital age of art that you see today has gone on to be a big influence just about every artist that is known today.
Now if families or any groups of people who want to have an artist paint a portrait of them all, will only have to submit a photo to get an oil painting done as the artist will then just translate the photo to a canvas.
The once brilliant and beautiful art of original oil paintings has now become lost to the more convenience and the speed of the digital modern age as well as the hectic schedules and deadlines. However, many of the oil painting artist mostly are …
Artificial Intelligence to Create Abstract Art – Absolutely!
Artificial Intelligence to Create Abstract Art – Absolutely!
Have you ever looked at abstract art, and shaken your head, and said to yourself “I could do better than that,” well, maybe it’s because you really could? Indeed that has come to my mind on numerous occasions, and it turns out that third-graders are actually quite good at abstract art, and some of them are as good, or nearly as good as some of the top professional artists that win accolades the world over. Yes, it’s true that art is subjective, but; is abstract art really subjective?
It appears some computer scientists have used computational algorithms and software to prove that it isn’t actually subjective at all. In other words they have figured out a way to determine if abstract art is good, or if it is not. If you are an abstract artist, this might bother you, and if you are an art collector, you might just want to stop reading this article right now because I don’t want to be the one to tell you, or to offend your purchases at such high prices. Okay so, I’d like to discuss this for a moment if you will allow me to;
There was an interesting article not long ago on the MIT Technology Review Blogging Network “The Physics arXiv Blog titled “Measuring the Quality of Abstract Art – Abstract Artists Are Only 4% Better Than Child Artists, According to a Controversial New Way of Evaluating Paintings” which was posted by the famous KFC from MIT Blogger on June 14, 2011. Well, just by the title you can tell it was an intriguing article, and maybe you might want to go read it, but I’d like to use this opportunity to project another concept to you.
The realization that by creating AI software which can judge art in this way, it has rules for determining good and poorly done abstract art, thus, we can use these computer rules to create it as well. That is to say that now we know the methodology, and rules for determining the best abstract art, then all we have to do is use those rules while having the computer produce the best abstract works. In other words, we are about to put out of business all be Abstract Artists in the world, and fill everyone’s living room with brilliant masterpieces, that were not even created by humans.
Indeed, you will recall I did warn all the abstract artists, and the abstract works collectors above, because I believe this will change everything, and the human that beats the computer for the best abstract creation may just be a third grader. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.…
Shaving Foam for Kids!
Shaving Foam for Kids!
When you hear ‘shaving foam for kids’ do you automatically think that is wrong and should be ‘shaving foam for men? What if I suggested using shaving foam for kids as part of their creative play? Before you start open out a black bin liner and cover the workspace you are going to use. Fix the black bag firmly to the table using masking tape. Put an apron on each child and roll up their sleeves. Pre-frame beforehand that they are not allowed to put the foam in their mouth or up their nose.
Pump a blob of shaving foam about the size of three tennis balls on the table in front of each child. Add in some poster paint. Poster paints are safe for children to use and non-toxic. Allow each child to choose the colour they want in the foam. Shaving foam stimulates many of the childrens’ senses. For example the smell of the foam is nice, maybe it reminds them of the smell of Daddy’s face after he has shaved. The texture of the foam is soft. As the foam is easily manipulated children will have lots of fun spreading it out on the table, making shapes with it, drawing letters and numbers in it.
Although the children are playing they are also learning. This is a relaxing game for them. When they are moving the foam around on the table they are using their imagination. Allow them to experiment with it. When they are making shapes and drawing letters they are developing their fine motor skills. Mixing different colours of poster paint into the shaving foam is another wonderful opportunity for the child to learn about colour. What happens when you mix blue and yellow paint in the foam? What happens when you mix red and white? It is also a good opportunity to encourage conversation about colours and what happens when they are mixed together.
Children gain great pleasure by discovering things for themselves. Introduce some lollipop sticks and some leaves and notice how the children use them to play. There are no limitations on their imagination. You will be absolutely amazed at the ideas and stories they will come up with. So, even though you are probably thinking this is a very messy activity and maybe too much trouble, why not give it a go? The children will love it and you will be blown away by their creativity. You can’t put a price on a child’s smile and laughter. So think fun, laughter and shaving foam!…

Abstract Canvas Wall Art For a Modern Home
Abstract Canvas Wall Art For a Modern Home
What else would look good in a modern minimalistic home but an abstract canvas wall art. Even though art trends keep changing, abstract art is going to be popular for a very long time. Mixed medium abstracts are gaining popularity too but classic abstract will remain trendy for a long time. Abstract art can be found in single piece paintings or in canvas art sets of 2 to 8 or more pieces. Tailor Your Home With Wall Art
Tailor Your Home With Wall Art
Wall art is a very broad term. It can simply be a family portrait, a painting of a historical landmark, or probably a painting, which can be done by an amateur or even a famous painter. Almost any kind of wall art can be placed inside one’s home. However, not all of them would blend in with the interiors. Choosing which ones do blend is an important step when one is acquiring any wall art. Another equally important step is finding out how to use wall art to define your very home.
A wall art can transform any room in your house. Here are some of the ways how you can utilize art to change your home:
1. Quickly change the mood of the room through wall arts. Colors can represent mood and choosing a dominant color in any room would definitely change the mood of the whole room. You can choose a art that has a lot of pastel shades or you might want to make it bolder by getting loud and solid colors. Not only the color but also the content of the art. For the kitchen, you might want getting still paintings of fruits or vegetables, just to show that the area is concerned with food.
2. Play with memories using arts. One of the fastest ways to make others remember the past is show them a blown up photo of an event. These can be used as wall art as well. Select a suitable photo for any room and have it blown up and framed. For example, for your children’s room, you might want to show pictures of the baby having his or her first steps. For the living room, you can have a portrait of the whole family. These art materials set the tone of any given room.
3. Change a dull wall into a wall full of life. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an artwork based on something that’s real. It could be an abstract work of art. These art works simply brings life to any home. Or if you are into natural things, why not choose from the different flowers, plants, or areas around the world that are associated with specific areas and time? Sunflowers are well known during the summer season, the red and gold foliage for fall, and of course, the mountain peaks and their snow caps showing that it is winter. With the right piece of art, you can bring life to any room.
If you are looking to brighten up and set the tone of any room in the house, you might want to check out the many different arts available both online and offline. Setting the mood and defining any room in the house just became a whole lot easier with wall arts.…
The Brave Art Teacher: Making the Contemporary High School Art Class Relevant to Your Students
The Brave Art Teacher: Making the Contemporary High School Art Class Relevant to Your Students
We teach in contemporary, not modern times. This realization requires a transformative pedagogical approach to the teaching of high school art. The term “modern” leads people to believe that whatever stems from it is cutting-edge and alive. However, in art terms, modern is of the past — and contemporary is of today.
For instance, Matisse and Picasso, two “modern” artists who work in different “styles” are no longer at the cutting edge of contemporary culture. While both men were art mavericks in their own right and spoke to the issues of their times, they are not our contemporaries — and dare I say — they are largely of little relevance to contemporary teenagers. Of course, I do not advocate that we entirely erase their (or the canon’s) contribution to art’s history – but I surely don’t see them as the most inspiring artists for teens to be exposed to. There are plenty of contemporary artists who talk about the critical issues of today such as sustainability, body image, spirit, consumption; who use contemporary media such as video, sound, and installation; and who make art for public and/or personal reasons. Your high school art students see artists such as these as much more relevant to their lives.
Henry Warwick, an interdisciplinary artist and professor, contextualizes “culture today” as in an “eternal contemporary” condition – a sort of schizoid hypermodernity void of the lulls that past eras have provided. For example, between approximately 600 and 1400 in Western Europe, art, music, and fashion changed little during a time of absolute church authority. The era between the 1400’s to the mid 1800’s showed little change at first. However, as European (and later, American) society changed its energy base from solar and renewable sources (such as wind, water, human and animal power) to exponentially more powerful fossil or nonrenewable fuels (first coal, then oil and natural gas and nuclear), it naturally accelerated the exchange of signifiers of social change. From there, we jump into the Industrial Age to the Technological to the Conceptual Age and smack into the Eternal Contemporary. This era’s mode makes sense if you think about how quickly fashion comes in and out of favor: shoes, music, make-up, news, politics, cultural musings, technology and industry quickly change.
In other words, extended eras of living are gone as the contemporary is eternally moving – and our curriculum must move too! Within an eternal contemporary construct, we cannot expect last school year’s curriculum to be relevant to this year’s students. High school art teachers can embrace the challenge of the “new” and explore the plethora of art materials, ideas and artists available to students about contemporary art and the people/world that produces it. After all, isn’t exploring what artists do?…
The Northern Lights on a Canvas
The Northern Lights on a Canvas
The northern lights are a unique phenomenon. They have inspired painters from Canada and Alaska throughout human history. Painting the Northern Lights is considered a genre of its own. The Aurora Borealis is liked by both traditional artists and those that tend to prefer Modernism. People that enjoy long vacations can sign up for an art class and learn how to paint the Aurora first hand.
Paul Gauthier is a very talented artist. He is not only a painter, but a photographer as well. Gauthier’s passion for the arts can be compared to his passion for preserving the beautiful Canadian nature. Paul Gauthier’s Northern Lights was painted in 2003, and it is a very vivid representation of the gorgeous night’s sky. The landscape provides a view of tall mountains straight ahead that are reflected in a lake’s water. The Aurora is reflected in the lake as well. Gauthier is a recognized artist. Some of his work is purchased by Texaco, Bank of Montreal, the Canadian branches of IBM and GE, Meryl Lynch, Sears, and others. In 1991, Paul Gauthier received an award for his artistic and cultural contribution to the community.
Larry Wowk is another great Canadian painter that knew how to appreciate and recreate the Northern Lights. Unfortunately, Wowk passed away in 2009, but his paintings reveal a passionate legacy about capturing the Aurora lights on canvas. Wowk was a master of oil on canvas paintings. In order to create the Northern Lights, he used an airbrush.A
Some artists prefer to have a Modernist approach when painting the Borealis. Scott Adami is a United States painter who does wonders with acrylics. His painting Aurora Borealis is acrylics on canvas. Adami has chosen to combine strong colors with very elegant brushwork. Even though this is unusual abstract art a viewer can almost see how the Northern Lights move in the night’s sky changing their form. Scott is the creator of many incredible works with bright colors and unmistakable style.A
Another gorgeous representation of the Northern Lights is that of Rani Priya Mullane. The artist has completely captured the essence of the Northern Lights in the painting Cold Aurora Lights. The landscape art is created from a frozen lake and a gorgeous fantasy forest.A
Painting the Northern Lights requires a lot of skills. First of all, knowing how to properly recreate a landscape is a must. A second skill is dealing with the lights themselves. Some artists prefer to use an airbrush in order to create a more realistic effect. Painters who spend time in the north cannot resist the temptation of painting the Lights. Everyone sees these lights in his or her own way. However, thanks to every artist’s unique talent, people can purchase a painting and enjoy the spectacular display for themselves.
Of course, a beginner artist can try his or her skill by trying to paint the Northern Lights. This can be done with oil paints or acrylics, since they have the …

Advice on Painting Wood Shutters
Advice on Painting Wood Shutters
House shutters provide an exceptional curve appeal that can come in handy if you’re ever going to try and sell. This is especially true of wood shutters. However, outside of aesthetics shutters need attention every few years as they are prone to damage from constantly being exposed to the elements whether wind, rain, or shine.
A good time to paint wood shutters is when you are painting your home. Either way, if you’re just painting the shutters here’s some tips on how to get the job done.
Tools: sand paper, outdoor latex or oil paint depending on what was previously used, wood horses (for propping up shutters during painting), paint brushes, paint pan, a sponge, dish detergent and water, a ladder. NOTE: When using a ladder its best to have someone assist you, especially if you are carrying the shutters down from a second story window. Also, you may need other items if repairs are necessary. These may include a paint scraper, wood filler, and primer.
1. Remove the shutters from the house. It’s a good idea to remove them all at once and plan to paint them together as this will save time. If you go in this direction make sure you mark which window they came from and which side, as some may have ‘settled’ differently than others and only fit back in their original spot.
2. Assess the shutters and make repairs:
• Use a paint scraper to remove chipped or pealing paint.
• Test if any part of the shutter is rotting.
• If so clean out the rotting wood and purchase a product at your local hardware store and follow instructions for filling the hole.
• Lightly sand of the rest of the shutter, which will give the top coat of paint better sticking power. There are products on the market that will do the same thing as sanding but with less effort.…
