Dog Care: Keeping your Dog Healthy and Happy
You obviously love your dog and would give him the best care you can to keep him healthy and happy. You feed your dog, walk him, give him baths, and groom him: basic things you do for your dog. You might not be aware but there are a number of things more that you should not neglect. Forgetting these things may cause serious health concerns and can be bad for your dog. Keep regular tabs on these things.
One of the things dog owners tend to forget is dental care. A lot of dogs suffer dental diseases at a young age and it is common. It really takes much more than giving your dog healthy puppy treats and looking out for gum diseases. A dental check-up done by a trained professional will help expose and correct other dental problems like decaying or cracked teeth. So while he is still a puppy, it is important that you start his dental care. Don’t postpone gum and dental care because he will become susceptible to diseases.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush for his teeth and gums. Start brushing the front teeth gradually and then the gums to ensure that all places are covered.
It comes as a surprise to many that dog owners actually forget about fleas, which is so common but easily preventable. The problem with fleas is that they cause skin allergies, so even a little flea infestation can turn into a serious one. In order to prevent fleas, you need to know what attracts them in the first place. Warm and humid environments are what fleas look for, and they avoid cold and dry places. If you can’t avoid the heat and humidity, especially during summer and fall, there are flea creams or chewy tablets you can buy for your dog’s skin protection.
During the rest of the year, you can use more natural treatments. Homemade concoctions and essential oils are also helpful to use as they don’t contain chemicals that can affect your dogs coat.
Your dog will eat any kind of food that you give him, unlike cats who are more fussy. This, however, has led to dog owners feeding their dogs stuff that may be harmful to his health.
The manufacturing procedures and meat quality of some popular dog food company has also caused concern to some dog owners. Sometimes it can pass as legal in some countries for poor quality meat, from sick animals, to be put in dog food. But even good quality meat, when it passes through intense heat can lose a lot of nutrients before it is completely processed.
Be informed about what you are buying.
