Importance of Increasing the Vocabulary For a Fiction Author
On a regular basis, fiction authors use certain vocabularies when writing. For you to have a big number of words to choose from when writing, you need to learn other vocabularies. When you are a fiction writer it is best if you use verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives that best bring out the writing. Good writing is not only how well you put the words together, it is also about the words themselves. It is easy to get into a novel that is engaging when you read it. After reading and enjoying the novel, reread it again. The goal is to examine how the work was written. How the plot and characters were developed as well as the technical aspects such as grammar are some of the things you should be mindful of. Be mindful of the fact that American and British authors write differently.
The difference in use of some words, punctuation and spelling are the places these authors differ. While Americans use among, the British use the word amongst. There are standard rules that you should stick to when writing for either the American or British readers.
Expanding the base of the vocabulary fiction authors know is important and it is possible to do. This can be done anytime when they are reading another author’s work. It is advisable that you note down any new vocabulary that you come across. Despite it being general knowledge, most authors do not do this. It is one of the many ways of building your vocabulary even though it is a logical thing to do. To make categories that suits your needs, get a notebook or any other means you desire. When people are talking or when there is a dialogue on the TV and when you are reading you should be keen to listen. Take note of the verbs, nouns, modifiers and adjectives or any compound nouns that are being used. You will be amazed about the words you already use, the ones you didn’t know about and those you never thought of using. It is also great to keep a list of words or phrases that your characters might occasionally use. Use a phrase like ‘her eyes surveyed the room ‘ when describing the action of the eye.
Taking note of such words and phrases gives you the ability to be creative in the description of what is going on internally and externally regarding your characters. You will be able to rephrase your words and write authentic and creative vocabulary when using the lists you kept. The first draft you make should use this list.
